Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths – Secondary Non-Specialists

  • by

This programme is designed to support non-specialist teachers teaching maths in a secondary school in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in maths in the classroom.

Drawing on best practice established by the Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST), this programme consists of 6 days which will be delivered face to face, in a Manchester school venue.

This programme is being led by Sue Hough and Jo Kennedy, PGCE Senior Lecturers in Mathematics Education at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Content

Aligned with the pedagogy behind teaching for mastery, the new programme will enable participants to explore six key themes:

  • Structure of the number system
  • Operating on number
  • Multiplicative reasoning
  • Sequences and graphs
  • Statistics and probability
  • Geometry

What are the benefits?

Participants will:

  • explore and increase their use of a range of pedagogic approaches consistent with teaching for mastery
  • increase their confidence in planning for progression in maths
  • improve their subject and curriculum knowledge of secondary maths with a particular emphasis on mathematical structures in key areas.

Each participating teacher will be provided with a hard-copy workbook for each session full of useful representations for the classroom that can be annotated and used for reflection. They will also work with a school-based mentor between sessions to reflect, plan and think deeply about mathematical concepts and how these are most effectively used in maths lessons.

Who can apply?

A teacher that is currently teaching some mathematics but who has not undertaken initial teacher training (ITT) in mathematics.

What is the cost?

This training is fully funded by the Maths Hubs programme and so is free to participating schools.
