Optional entry phase for Teaching for Mastery Programme
Aims:
There are two entry points on the Teaching for Mastery programme. Schools can start at either the Readiness or the Development stage.
One benefit of joining Mastery Readiness is to begin to collaborate with and support other schools – enjoying the advantages of being part of a Work Group community. All participating schools will then be ready to progress into Development Work Groups in 2025/26 after the Mastery Readiness phase, followed by Embedding and Sustaining Work Groups in subsequent years.
Mastery Readiness Work Groups focus on two key areas:
the development of effective leadership that will remove barriers and put in place structures to support change and teacher professional development in relation to teaching for mastery
the development of classroom culture and attitudes to maths that will support a teaching for mastery approach, on the part of both teachers and their pupils.
Please watch this video – to find out more about the Readiness phase
Who can take part?
Schools will have an identifiable barrier to being able to successfully implement teaching for mastery at present. Barriers may include an Ofsted grading of RI or Inadequate, poor pupil progress in maths, serving an area of low social mobility, or issues in the school that have meant the implementation of sustained change has been difficult.
What is involved?
Two lead participants to attend all sessions from each school
Five work group sessions spread across the academic year
Three bespoke school visits spread across the year from the Readiness Lead
After the year-long programme, Mastery Readiness schools will be ready to progress into Development Work Groups and beyond.
What is the cost?
There is no charge for participation in this programme. However, schools must ensure that staff are released to engage in the workshops and school visits, and that the headteacher attends events where appropriate.
