Reception Teachers: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) New for 2026-27

Reception Teachers: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) New for 2026-27

Aims:

This programme is designed for Reception teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths

This one-year SKTM programme will include number, shape, space and pattern. Participants will also explore how children’s learning in all these areas can be supported through the development of the following skills:

  • oracy (including the development of mathematical language)
  • spatial reasoning
  • executive function

Participants will:

  • explore and increase their use of a range of pedagogic approaches that will support pupils in engaging with and developing their maths
  • increase their confidence in enhancing opportunities for mathematical learning in all areas of provision
  • model the use of mathematical language and thinking as part of everyday activities in the setting
  • demonstrate enhanced maths subject knowledge using developmental learning trajectories to assess and plan for well-sequenced and coherent learning opportunities
  • understand how maths opportunities can be developed across all areas and in everyday routines
  • understand how to support children’s learning through developing oracy, spatial reasoning and executive function skills across all areas of mathematics routines.

Who can take part:

This programme supports Reception teachers to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and use a teaching for mastery approach as exemplified in the NCETM’s Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery.

It would be particularly valuable for a Reception teacher and teaching assistant to attend the programme together. They can then work together on developing classroom practice. On the application form you will asked to indicate if you wish for a teaching assistant to attend alongside the reception teacher.

PLEASE NOTE: Teaching Assistants can only attend alongside the Reception teacher. We cannot allocate places to the Teaching Assistant only.

What’s involved:

  • Four hub-led days sessions spread across the year  to develop specialist knowledge. Opportunity to work collaboratively to consider the progression and difficulties relating to specific aspects of maths and how teaching for mastery supports children in Reception
  • Between these days participants will reflect on learning and notice the impact of the changes in their practice on their pupils.
  • In addition participants will also complete an NCETM-led asynchronous module  between each hub-led day to build on their knowledge and understanding

What Is The Cost?

This programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and so is free to participating schools/colleges.
