Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum, and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This project enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense.
Professional development materials will be provided to cover five short sessions a week, with participants expected to support colleagues in their year groups to use the resources with all Year 4 and 5 classes.
This programme and its Work Groups are open to all schools that are currently fully engaged in Teaching for Mastery at either the Sustaining or Embedding Phase and will be expected to continue to engage in the Sustaining Phase while taking part in Mastering Number at KS2. In addition, all schools must have implemented Mastering Number in R and KS1 for a minimum of two years.
Lead participants from Work Group schools will be the maths lead and ‘lead’ teachers from Year 4 and Year 5. Some support will also be given to headteachers. Where appropriate, Lead Teachers are expected to support the other teachers in their year group. Maths leads are encouraged to attend these sessions with Lead Teachers, to help them understand and implement the programme
This programme focuses on the key knowledge and understanding needed to secure multiplicative relationships in Year 4 and Year 5. Participating schools will receive online central training from the NCETM for Maths Leads and Year 4&5 teachers alongside support from NW1 Maths Hub at a local level through local online sessions.
The resources available provide teaching materials for five short sessions each week, aimed at developing children’s fluency and flexibility with number. Lead Teachers in schools will also contribute to an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
The Mastering Number Programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
