WHOLE SCHOOL – Implementing a high-quality ambitious curriculum and approach to teaching mathematics for all pupil
Our Teaching for Mastery programme is an ongoing professional development program to support schools to develop fidelity to teaching for mastery in their setting. Schools will implement high-quality teaching and learning opportunities for all pupils. This is achieved through research and impact driven professional development which will help participants to explore effective leadership stratgeies. Maths leads from participating schools will work alongside our experienced primary teaching for mastery specialists to consider their whole-school approach to mathematics. Each year there will a spotlight on an element of the NCETM’s ‘Essence of Teaching for Mastery’ to allow participants (and in turn implement a school-wide approach) to understand and develop this area. This will be established through developing a deep understanding of the principles of Teaching for Mastery by observing live lessons, participating in workgroup discussions, and working closely with participant schools through both TRGs and collaborative school visits to support implementation. It also involves strengthening understanding of effective implementation strategies and engaging in gap tasks tailored to your school to further develop the teaching of mathematics.
This Work Group is intended for all schools who have participated in a TfM Work Group for at least two years. There will also be the opportunity for schools to choose from a list of focused themes for implementation of particular aspects of teaching for mastery, which are either resourced or are part of a Work Group’s involvement in Research & Innovation. This Work Group is ongoing and schools participate year on year to strive towards improved pupil outcomes through fidelity to teaching for mastery.
This programme is for primary schools that have previously taken part in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group and want to continue to deepen and embed their approach. Each school will continue working with a small group of local schools, supported by a Mastery Specialist.
Maths Leads will attend five full day sessions, some of which will include collaborative school visits. There may be an opportunity for an additional participant from your school should space allow.
In addition, the school, will have access to focus themes to further support school-wide implementation. We are awaiting further information from NCETM for 2026-27 but these may include ongoing support for Mastering Number, sessions for new maths leads, sessions for teachers new to TfM, collaborative planning etc.
Benefits
Pupils will have high expectation of themselves as mathematicians, they will continue to show a positive attitude towards the subject
Pupils will demonstrate mathematical behaviours during lessons, associated with a mastery approach
Pupils will experience coherent, well-designed lessons
You will develop your understanding of and practice of implementation leadership
You will continue to refine school structures and systems to ensure that all teachers can be supported to embed and sustain teaching for mastery across school
You will continue to ensure a sustainable model for continuing professional development activity such as for collaborative planning and ongoing specialist subject knowledge
You will support development for all teachers, and have systems in place to identify and support teachers who require more input than others with regards to teaching for mastery
You will enhance maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on progression, especially within the key areas of maths addressed by the Work Group
You will collaborate with other schools to share practice and refine approaches
You will continue to access support from our maths hub for implementing Mastering Number across all stages
The Work Groups are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so are free to participating schools.
