Early Years Pathway 2, Spatial Reasoning: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)
Early Years Pathway 2, Spatial Reasoning: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)
Pathway Two: Pattern, Shape, Space and Measure
Aims:
This programme is designed to support Early Years teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils with their mathematics across the provision.
This PD is relevant to the EYFS Programme Pathway 2, where the focus is on Pattern, Shape, Space and Measure. This is for teachers who have already completed Pathway 1 of the EYFS training..Participants should participate in only one pathway in any one year.
The spatial reasoning pathway considers:
An understanding of the importance of spatial reasoning in pupils’ mathematical development
Developing pedagogies for reasoning about shapes, spatial and geometric reasoning (including position, direction and movement), and spatial and number reasoning
Who can take part:
It will be particularly relevant for individual teachers that have not received maths-specific training. Maths leads in primary schools who want to deepen their knowledge of Early Years maths practice would benefit from participating in this programme. A maths lead may find that participating alongside an Early Years teacher from their school will support their understanding of progression from Foundation Stage to KS1.
What’s involved:
four full day sessions spread across the year
between sessions, participants contribute to their online community, complete school-based tasks, and share their observations through discussions with peers.
What Is the cost?
This programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and so is free to participating schools/colleges.
Participants must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme, including the completion of classroom activities/gap tasks in between sessions. Each participant is required to attend all 4 sessions.
