Supporting those with low prior attainment studying A-Level Maths: Research and Innovation Work Group (RIWG)

Key Stage 4 to 5 Coherence 

This is a Research and Innovation Work Group aiming to meet a need found locally. 

Aims: 

This group will focus on supporting pupils gaining grades 6 or 7 at GCSE with successfully accessing the A-level maths content. This group runs in parallel with the standard A-Level; Pedagogy Work Group which focuses on problem solving at A-Level. 

  • Participants will consider A-level pedagogies to support pupils attaining grades 6 or 7 at GCSE
  • Participants will explore and evaluate the impact of centrally created resources and pedagogies based upon Teaching for Mastery principles 
  • Participants will consider strategies to ‘fill the gaps’ in students’ knowledge as they pass through the year 12 curriculum 
  • Pupils will be supported to engage with A-Level content while maintaining breadth and depth of learning for all students. 

Who is it for: 

A-Level maths teachers that have students in their year 12 cohort that gained a grade 6 or 7 in their maths GCSE 

What is involved: 

Attending a mixture of face-to-face and online sessions to work with a like-minded group of teachers to help to support lower prior attaining pupils with understanding the maths A-Level curriculum. There will be opportunities to create resources, evaluate and reflect on pedagogies and further explore the Teaching for Mastery principles. 
There is an expectation that particpants will carry out activities and research in their own schools between sessions. 

What is the cost: 

The Maths Hub is funded by the DfE so this cost of free of charge for participants.
