Teaching Assistant Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths (SKTM)

  • by

This 5-day programme is designed to support Teaching Assistants in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, therefore enabling them to further support pupils in maths in the classroom.

A key focus is not only on improving the participants’ ability to understand mathematical structures but also to ensure they have the appropriate pedagogical knowledge to best support their pupils.

Three core modules will be addressed: Number Sense (addition and subtraction), Multiplicative Reasoning and Fractions.

By getting involved, participants and their schools will:

  • enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key structures in each mathematical area covered.
  • understand the key elements that form number sense, forms of addition and subtraction, forms of multiplication and division, and forms of fractions, including precise language, structures and representations.
  • review their practice as a result of the sessions and make specific adaptations to impact on pupil outcomes.

Who can apply?

Teaching Assistants who are supporting maths, and who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. This may be particularly relevant for new TAs or TAs that have not received maths-specific training.

Places are allocated on a first come first served basis and are restricted to two Teaching Assistants per school.

What is the cost?

This programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and so is free to participating schools/colleges.

Participants must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme, including the completion of classroom activities/gap tasks in between sessions. Each participant is required to attend 5 sessions which will be spread out throughout the academic year and will be mainly face-to-face.
