Early Years Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths (SKTM) – Pathway Two: Pattern, Shape, Space and Measure

  • by

Early Years Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths (SKTM): This programme is designed to support Early Years teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils with their mathematics across the provision.

This page is relevant to the EYFS Programme Pathway 2, where the focus is on Pattern, Shape, Space and Measure. This is for people who have already completed Pathway 1 of the EYFS training.

This year, we are pleased to announce some changes to the EYFS programme.

There are two SKTM Early Years pathways:

Pathway One: Number Patterns and Structures
Pathway Two: Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures.

Participants should participate in only one pathway in any one year. Pathway 2 is new to NW1 Maths Hub in the 2023 – 24 academic year and is for participants who have already completed Pathway 1.

Schools will be contacted specifically to participate in Pathway 2, to build on their previous training.

Each pathway has three core maths session, three core pedagogy sessions, and a task to support the transition from theory to practice. In a final core module, participants review the quality of provision and how this supports a teaching for mastery approach.

Key Content

Pathway 2: Spatial Reasoning
What is spatial reasoning?
Reasoning about shapes
Spatial and geometric reasoning (including position, direction and movement)
Spatial reasoning and number

By getting involved, participants will:
develop enhanced maths subject knowledge with a particular emphasis on developmental progression in the Early Years to ensure sequences of learning are cohesive.
consider the learning opportunities and pedagogical approaches across the wider provision – reviewing and enhancing the opportunities to promote mathematical learning across the provision.

Who can apply?

This programme is designed for individuals who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths to three to five year olds. This may be particularly relevant for NQTs, teachers that have moved phases or teachers that have not received any Early Years maths-specific training. NB: Pathway 2 is available to participants who have already completed Pathway 1.

What is the cost?

This programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and so is free to participating schools/colleges.

Participants must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme, including the completion of classroom activities/gap tasks in between sessions. Each participant is required to attend all 3 sessions.

Arrangements for the 2023 – 24 programme will be posted here as soon as possible.
